the living space, among other things.

So a long time ago, when I moved into my new apartment, I decided to paint the walls because Katie and I were sick of living in dorms that are so prison-like it's depressing. So, we decided we'd take advantage of the fact that we have real walls. So all my roommates were telling me that we could paint, but I thought I better go to the office to make sure that I wasn't going to be charged an exorbitant amount of money for doing so.

So I traipsed over to the office and asked them. They told me I had to sign a paper saying I'd pay $25 at the end of the year if I didn't paint it back to white. The $25 would be their payment so they could paint it back. I was annoyed. Because everyone I knew around here was painting left and right, and me being the goody-goody that I am, I had to go and ask, and had to pay $25. Annoying.

So my mom came over a couple days and we went and picked out a periwinkle color, moved all the furniture, and painted the room. It took a long time and after completing the first coat, I decided a second coat was just not necessary. I see now (after it dried and all) there are plenty of spots where a second coat would have been ideal, but... I'm only living here for a ye
ar so I don't care much. And, another conclusion reached after finishing the job, I have decided they can have $25 to paint it back- because I sure as heck wouldn't paint a room for $25 and I'm not going to go spend $20 on paint and then spend hours doing something I don't want to do just to save $25. It is soooooo worth it to me to just pay it at the end of the year.

Anyway. So I think it looks quite home-ee. My h
andy dandy brother Kyle came over and took me to Home Depot to buy the stuff so he could put the shelf up for me. That was very convenient because I really have too much crap to put under my bed, and having a shelf makes things more accessible and makes the wall look less bare.

Since these pictures were taken, I have added a square arrangement of 12 pictures to that big empty spot on the wall above my desk and below my dalmatian poster. They're all pictures of home and people from home, so it helps me get my CT dose whenever I need it. I think my w
all looks quite nice and I'm happy with the way the room looks. I also added the small shelf at the end of my bed and the mirror so that I don't have to always go out into the hall when I need a mirror (i.e. putting on make-up, putting in contacts, etc.) because the mirror is above two sinks in the hallway, and it's just a little too public sometimes.

In the last picture you can catch a glimpse of our walk-in closet. It's nothing terribly special, but it is kind of fun to tell people I have a walk-in closet. And it has a lot more bar space than Heritage Halls did, so I'm finding plenty of room to hang everything.

I have to go through and down-size my wardrobe though. I just went shopping with Erin and bought two new pairs of jeans because I recently ripped one pair and decided another was too worn out to wear. So I got new ones. I counted how many pairs of pants I have, and it made me feel a little guilty for buying more. I have 38 pairs of pants. ... Of course, I wear about 15% of those on a regular basis, but I have in my possession 38 pairs of pants. Yes, I think I'm right- it's time to down-size. (p.s.- I won't tell you how many pairs of shoes I have because I think all of those are necessary and refuse to down-size my shoe collection.)

Anyway. That's about it for now. Work is going well-- soon I will post some stories about my students. They're pretty entertaining people. I love them much. And classes are going pretty well. I was the only one in my Shakespeare class to get a 100% on our first quiz, so that was exciting. The professor now seems to hold me in high regard which is kind of fun.

I took my first Psych Statistics quiz on Wednesday and think I did pretty well. I'll find out on Monday. I
've been learning a lot and keeping really really busy.

until again

the faces in these places...

hello all!

this is going to be short because i have a ton of things i should be doing. but... i just wanted to add another to the list.

last night a girl told me i looked like the girl who played joe in little women. it turns out that woman is winona rider. care to compare?
It's weird that all of a sudden people seem to think I'm everyone else. But, I decided that it might just be because I've never met such a large number of new people in my life. That's why I've never heard this all before. I've never been a new face to anyone. Because I grew up in a town where everyone's face is familiar, so you're not trying to link a new face to someone's face (like someone famous) that you already know. Make sense?

I think so.

Hope you're all doing well. Sometime I will write a good update.

closure for provo

so, i wanted to write a post today, but right now, i will offer you a news story found here .

They found Camille Cleverley's body today around 3 pm. (She was the missing BYU student last seen on Aug. 30). She was found at the bottom of a cliff up by bridal veil falls (for any of you familiar with the area.)

So yeah. I heard about it tonight at ward prayer. It's sad, but it looks like she just fell. It makes me feel better to know she wasn't kidnapped and assaulted and all. As I said, it's still sad, but I'm glad their family (and provo) knows now. It was getting eery walking by tons of posters every day, wondering if they were ever going to find her.

Yup.

A real post will come soon. Possibly/probably tomorrow.

Extra Extra: Tina Fey is Broke!

Hello all!

So I'm back in Utah and I've had so many posts I've meant to write lately, including this one. I started my job as a Peer Mentor for Freshman Academy at BYU. This means I have 40 students to look after for the semester. I attend their classes, hold personal interviews, and host lunches/dinners/study groups that may or may not involve their professors. It is a somewhat daunting task. I was really nervous to meet them at New Student Orientation last week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). But I had the best turn-out of most of the groups-- 30 out of 40. The students I met were really receptive and really nice. They seem to even like me! Yay! It's weird how much I care about them-- I got their names in July and meeting them was so exciting. These are my students. These are my students. It's great. It's going to be a busy semester, and it's probably going to get overwhelming, but it's going to be great.

Anyway.

While at New Student Orientation, one of my students said "You know, you really look like Rachel Leigh Cook." Hmm. Never in my life have I been told I look like anyone "famous". Never. Not once. Except for when Mrs. Bing told me one of my prom pictures looked like Judy Garland. So this was a relatively new experience for me. Then, the next night I was at an activity that involved all the freshmen (4500 is a lot) and was sitting in a group of students I didn't know. One of the girls sitting next to me looked over and said "You know, you really look like Tina Fey. You just need the boxy glasses. You look a lot like her- it's weird." Hmmmm. And then on Saturday, Katie's dad was here. She mentioned something about someone saying I looked like Tina Fey, and he said "No, you look like Anne Hathaway." (Ok- so this is just weird.) Then when mentioning all these famous people that I apparently look like, my uncle said "I've always thought you and your sister look like Lindsay Lohan. Before she got weird."

Wow. Somewhere in the last week I apparently developed a look-alike face. Weird. So, of course, I have included pictures of me and all of them so you can make your own judgments.

Then on Monday (our day off) I went to the bookstore to buy some books. I had been putting it off because (as I told all who inquired) I couldn't stand to see that much money leave my bank account at one time. So I was putting it off as long as possible, so as to preserve any feeling of protectiveness I had regarding the money I spent my entire summer trying to earn. Anyway. I signed up to take a Shakespeare class because I felt like I didn't know enough about his works to feel like an intellectual member of society and it filled a General Education requirement. I went to the bookstore and eagerly searched the shelves for Eng. 232 Section 1 to find the two books listed. My finger scanned the labels. I stopped when I finally found the correct one. My eyes shifted their gaze about 2 inches above to the shelf of books. My mouth fell open and before I could think I said out loud: "You've got to be kidding me." A guy book shopping next to me laughed. The book I was required to buy is about 5 inches thick. 2100 pages. Like 15 lbs. And, the best part, it cost me $80.

( I had to include a picture of this thing... but the picture doesn't quite do it justice. You can't get a feel for the weight and the girth. Which, by the way, I believe would be 3. Yes, 3 girth units is about right. If you haven't seen Brian Regan that doesn't make sense to you.)

No, wait, I think the best part was when I went to the class on Wednesday and the professor informed me that this literary monstrosity is supposed to accompany me to all 47 class periods during the semester. I am supposed to cart this thing back and forth 3 times a week. And, my new off-campus apartment (that is turning out to be less than fabulous) forces me to walk 25 minutes to get to the edge of campus. And campus is a big place. Seriously. Well, I should have strong shoulders by the end of the semester-- and possibly a deep hatred for a Shakespeare: either the William Shakespeare who wrote all the plays we're studying, or the William Shakespeare who teaches the class. (Yes, that really is his name. I wish I was making it up.)

Anyway. So I paid for my books- which were ridiculously expensive- (now I fully appreciate the books provided for me in public school)- and paid my partial tuition (which is a tiny amount in the whole collegiate scheme of things). But these things still made me feel quite broke. How quickly money slips out of a bank account. How expensive life is!

More entries to come soon,

back in provo

well, i'm back in utah for now.

i have some pictures and stuff and want to post a real entry soon. but for now, the talk of the town is a missing BYU student named camille cleverley. last seen on thursday august 30. check out the news story if you want.

i hope she turns up safe and relatively ok. i hope "foul play" really isn't involved-- it's just stories like these that make me a little more nervous to be walking to and from campus alone- (which i was already quite freaked out about.)
