Visiting Teaching FAIL

Well,

After giving my lesson the first week of February about Visiting Teaching, I felt like I would be a rather large hypocrite if I didn't actually do mine.

So, I met my (new) companion on Sunday and we agreed to each contact one of our visiting teachees to make appointments for today (yes, it's the last day of the month- but Saturday seemed to work best for everyone.)

We made appointments and prepared the message. I made brownies and we dutifully got together this morning to go and visit the girls together.

Neither of them were home.

brain freeze

today I was taking a shower and didn't even get myself wet by the time I had to turn it off because my roommate got in the other shower and my water pressure and temperature went to 0.

I waited, got back in when she was done and took one of the coldest showers ever (the Glenwood showers of January '08 take the cake for being THE coldest).

After the cold shower, I was getting dressed and put on my socks and sneakers before I realized I didn't have pants on.

I think some of my brain cells must have frozen to death in the shower.

p.s.- also, I killed 2 more spiders in my room. ICK.

A Provo Vacation. A... Provocation?

In an effort to try to keep up with the Joneses, or just Erin, I present to you my blog about Valentine's Day weekend. I also changed my background for our next inane holiday- but I'm not sure I like this background. Oh well- it'll be changed in less than a month!

On Friday, I had to stay on campus late and take a test for Psychological Testing (ironic?). It was lame. But I got a 95% on the test, so I'm happy.

On Saturday, it was doing this all day, so I had a limited range of travel. I spent the day running errands, studying a bit, and going to the Bean Museum* with Erin and being Will's Valentine (which is exhausting by the way). I also got a package in the mail from mom with classic Dickerson sugar cookies!!! :) Erin gave me a bag of Valentine's Day presents, which was really exciting. Although, as I told her, if you're thinking I was all "woe-is-me" because I was single on Valentine's Day, I wasn't. Wasn't "woe-is-me" that is. Anyway- my point is, I do not really like Valentine's Day as a holiday. I think I will like it when I'm married, or maybe engaged, but when you're just dating someone, I think it's an awkward holiday where you have to find a way to confess your undying love for each other, wondering if you'll break up in the next month. If you're going to do Valentine's Day while dating someone, I suggest perishable items. That way there's no long-lasting evidence of the holiday. Now that I've given you this, we can move on. So, my point was, I was really quite happy to be unattached on Valentine's Day- it saved me the stress of trying to find a sufficiently manly but still ridiculously mushy card/gift, and from having to accept a ridiculously mushy card/gift from whoever I was dating.

Anyway- so, after all that, I came home and got ready for a date. Yes, I had a date, with a boy in my ward. We went to Divine Comedy and came back to my apartment and made this (because he went on his mission to Korea) which was surprisingly pretty good. (It was like little fried dough pancakes, with cinnamon-sugaree goo in the middle). I have actually been having a craving for them.

And then I had to get up for church on Sunday. That was not so fun. I forgot what it was like to stay up late- my body is now used to having a set bedtime and getting 8 hours of sleep, so only getting 6ish made me pretty cranky.

Then I had to go to Ward Council. Which displaced my nap, which made me even more cranky.

I came home and made lunch, slept for a while, and did some homework. The aforementioned date came over again and brought me some Korean soup he made. It had fermented cabbage, tuna, onions, and red pepper flakes in it, and looked somewhat like this. Need I comment on whether or not I liked it? (It was very nice of him to bring it over, but I'm just really not into spicy exotic foods, or anything fermented, with fish. I like to play it safe with things that are going to be in my stomach, thank you very much.)

I went to bed somewhat early that night because I was so tired. Then on Monday I got up and went shopping with Erin, where I may have purchased 6 new clothing articles for $30 from this place. (I can't help myself! I think I get it from mom!**) And then we ate lunch at this restaurant, and then I came home and did homework and studied like crazy... maybe not like crazy. But I studied. I also went to this place, knowing all their Valentine's Day chocolate would be on sale and also knowing that I have a ravenous urge for chocolate most of the time, and bought me one of these . I almost bought 2, but then I remembered that mom was coming out here, and she would probably be buying chocolate and bringing it to us, so I called and she had to confess to that exact thing. Hah- I spoiled her fun, but I knew it!

So I studied and read assignments for the rest of the day. I went to school today wearing one of my new shirts, which two people commented on, and then went and took another test in New Testament. I got a 97% on the MC- there's still about 30 points in short answer, so we'll see.

I have another test this week and an essay due on Friday. School is a pain in the butt right now! But only 8 more weeks left, and I'll be free for four months!!

In other news, a friend of mine said she wants to go to NYC this summer- I told her I might be going home for a vacation and she should come with me and we could go. It probably won't happen, but it would be fun. A coworker of mine said today that she wants me to go on a trip with her at the end of the semester. "To where?" I asked. "It doesn't matter. NYC, Arizona, somewhere that's not Provo before I go home". (She's from India.) Oh, IDEA! Maybe I could go to India to visit her over the summer! Just kidding mom and dad. I don't think I'll be going to India. But anyway- maybe I'll get out of Provo a bit- that would be nice!!

K, well, I'm done now.

p.s.- I am just noticing that I wrote my last post about arachnophobia on Friday the 13th!!! How ironic.

*not a museum about legumes
**for the record, I have not purchased any articles of clothing since London, so I feel this was justified.
also, I do not know what the white square is right here ---->

arachnophobia

so...

I think I write an abnormally large proportion of my blog entries about spiders. But I can't help myself.

On Tuesday, I saw a spider crawling on my bedroom wall. I tried to coax it out from behind the Mardi Gras beads from Megan, but it wouldn't move. Finally, it fell down the wall and I quickly hit it with a shoe. I thought I killed it.

Then yesterday in Abnormal Psych, we were talking about phobias and how they develop and how to treat them. Our male grad. student was talking about how he is ridiculously afraid of spiders, as a lot of people are. He was talking about how most phobias come about because we have an encounter with the object that reinforces our fear response, and then every time we encounter the object, we have the fear response.

Well, he said "I think my phobia of spiders came from a time when I was in junior high. I was going grocery shopping for milk with my dad and we parked under a tree. We went in the store and I felt something crawling on my cheek, so I swatted at it, and there were all these tiny spiders. They were all over my neck and in my hair and crawling on my face. Apparently an egg sack fell off the tree we parked under, and out burst tons of little spiders. It freaked me out."

.... it freaked me out too, and I'm hearing about it 20 or so years later!! GAH. It reminded me of why I hate spiders so very very much. (I'm really quite terrified of them).

Tonight, I was getting ready for bed (after returning home from babysitting for Erin) and turned from my window to walk to the door, when my eyes saw something in front of my face and finally focused on a spider. At eye level. About 5 inches away from my face. GAH!!!!! (I'm wondering if this is the same spider from Tuesday- if it is, that is one hearty spider. If it's not... how many more are there??)

Back to the spider in question. It was spindling its web down from the light in my room. I finally decided I would smash it mid-air between two shoes, but when I got within a foot of it, it moved lower. It was about 6" from the floor when it started up again, and I couldn't risk the possibility of it getting back up to the light and having to live in fear of its next appearance. So I broke the web and smooshed it on the floor. Except I have carpet, so it took a couple tries and a little bit of screaming.

I feel ridiculous for screaming when I kill a spider. But I really can't help myself.

It's too bad dad wasn't here to kill it for me.

Now I'm going to bed at 11.30- because I have had a busy week, and I earned an early bed time- but I'm afraid my last waking moments will be filled with earnest hopes that the SIQ didn't leave an egg sack up there.

GAH.

when it rains...

IT POURS!!!

Hello there ladies and gentlemen.

I haven't been up to too much- just a couple tests this week that I should be studying for. And another one next week. I'm trying not to get stressed out about them, but being not-stressed has not provided me with a necessary catalyst for studying.

So... I'm just writing because my social life has suddenly become much more active! On Saturday of last week, I went to a London reunion party and got our group picture and said hello the professors and all. I got there late, and they were all standing in the entry way, and before I knew it, Dr. Benfell's wife was telling me to "Get together and smile!" and I had my very own picture taken with all three of the professors. I wondered if they did this to everyone else as they came in. Weird.

Anyway- moving on.

So over the weekend, Erin asked me if I could babysit for them this Friday because she has a dinner date thing with Bryce. I said I would because, after all, my Friday nights are open to do whatever I want, and I like them that way. So I just thought I could do them a favor. Then on Monday night a boy from my ward came over and asked me on a date-- for Friday. Of course, I told him I had babysitting plans, and then I told him "I would like to go though (to a comedy show)- maybe Saturday? Saturday just happens to be Valentine's Day..." He said he'd look into it. (He wanted to double date and had to ask the other kid.) I haven't heard back yet.

And then today at work, Tamanna came over and asked me if I wanted to go to Las Vegas this weekend with her and some of her girlfriends and a couple guys from her ward. This I totally want to do. But a) I'm not sure if I have money for it, and b) I have to babysit on Friday night and may have plans for Saturday night.

All this leads me to the conclusion: when it rains social engagements, it pours.

Boo.

addendum: I have already decided I will not go to Las Vegas- apparently that was not clear in this post. Along with the babysitting and possible date, I also have two tests to take.

Why ME?!?

dearest and darlingest readers,

I don't have much to say, but I just wanted to write to say I went to the student health center last week for a Tb test so I could continue volunteering at the Utah State Hospital. I went back in on Monday and as it turns out, I'm positive for Tuberculosis.

Just Kidding! I'm not. But I was feeling a little left out of the loop of siblings who have weird medical conditions to report. Well, not really weird I suppose- since Kyle has some bad mono going on, and Megan's just got something growing on her hand.

Anyway- so I don't have any medical conditions to report. But I thought I'd stop in and write about my first test of this semester! It was my Abnormal Psych test, which I took yesterday at about 8 pm, after spending the day in class and with students, and writing two papers in 3 hours. (I slept well last night.)

So, the test was 50 multiple choice questions and then another 50 points in short answer or essay. I think I did fine on the essay, except for the fact that I didn't know the difference between maladaptive thoughts and cognitive distortions. But now I do- too little too late I guess. Anyway- that was not the point. I got 45 of the 50 points on the multiple choice.

We went to class today and the professors (two grad students) showed us a distribution of the test scores. 1 person got 50/50, 2 got 49/50, 1 got 48/50, 2 got 47/50, and then there was me at 45/50. So I was a little disappointed that 6 people scored higher than I did. And then the female grad student says "How many of you got an answer key with your test?"

... ummm... excuse me?

Apparently the testing center handed out answer keys with a certain number of tests, and no one knows why, or how many were handed out. 5 people said they got one. FIVE?! Ok, and that's just the ones that are willing to admit it?! SERIOUSLY?!?! 5 people took their test with an answer key, and I didn't? What kind of sucker am I?!

Although, I suppose I should have some confidence in them, because the five that said they did get an answer key said they returned it without looking at it, and I'm sure some of them were lying, but even if they were, they at least weren't stupid enough to get all the answers right because only 3 people got a 98-100% on the test. And, the professor said the student who got a 100% also got an answer key and has admitted to cheating, so they're "working something out".

But seriously??

I took my first test yesterday and 5 people who also took it had all the answers given to them. Where is my luck when I need it?!? This is also the sentiment I felt when I missed out on free Denny's on Tuesday morning. Seriously. (FYI, like my parents, I made my own grand slam at home, sans bacon and sausage).

Anyway.

until another overly-dramatic-complaining-about-the-injustice-of-the-world mood strikes me,
