35ish things I should have written about!

hello there ladies and gentlemen,

I know it's been a while since I've posted, and I kind of worry that because I haven't been posting consistently,
I've lost my "fan base". Hah!
Oh well-- for those of you who have been faithful enough to hang on and are reading this now, hello! I promise this entry will not disappoint! There's plenty of pictures and all!
You know? I'm taking this Composing Personal History class, and let me just tell you, that it has caused something weird to happen to me. The creation and maintenance of this blog has contributed to this weird thing also. I live my life in episodes and blog posts. It's actually really strange. For instance, something will happen to me, and after it happens, I start thinking about how I can write it up into a good story. And what my title would be. And if I posted it on my blog, what pictures could I post with it? It's really weird. Anyway. So on with the blog post. I can't think of much to say because so much has happened that it's almost not worth trying to sort it all out.

Since my last post:
1) Oct. 20: I experienced my first (of the season) Utah Snow. We went out at 2 am to play in it. There were pictures. Maybe I'll post them here?

1a) (because I'm tired of renumbering...) Oct. 26-27: Kyle, Erin, Sawyer, and I took a trip to Idaho to see Megan play in their Halloween concert. It was pretty cool. It was a fun trip. Except for the DQ girl who said sauce cost extra for chicken nuggets and wouldn't tell me how much extra it was. Erin already wrote about that though...

2) Oct. 31: BYU cancelled their Bachelor's of Social Work program. Thank goodness I didn't go that route. I had struggled between that and Psych. and finally went with Psych. Thank goodness.

3) Oct. 31: I went to Erin's house and saw Will dressed up like a cowboy. I met Kyle's girlfriend Alicia and started dating Parker.

3a) Nov. 3: I hosted a roommate reunion at my apartment. It was a heck of a lot of fun.

4) Nov. 10 + 17: I took my students on two service project trips up to Midvale near SLC. We went to The Happy Factory and made toy cars. It was pretty fun. But the place only took 30 students at a time and we did it as a community, so we had 90 students that wanted to go, so we scheduled 3 shifts. I ended up having to drive there and back for one of the shifts. I drove a 15 passenger van, on Utah highways. Could have peed my pants. But we made it there and back safely and the students had fun I think. One fear faced I guess.
4a) Nov. 14: We had "Roommate Vogue Night"... meaning we picked out outfits for each other that were kind of slut-ish and put on lots of make-up and did hair all fancy and took lots of pictures. It was actually a lot of fun!! (I only posted a couple-- and tried to keep roommates out of it, lest they be blackmailed by someone later...haha!)

5) Not Sure When (NSW): I got interviewed for the Daily Universe that was doing an article about Freshman Academy Peer Mentors. The article has yet to be printed. They said soon though...
6) Nov sometime: The Daily Universe printed an article-- they arrested the guy who murdered my mom's roommate at BYU in the 70s, subsequently solving a case more than 30 years old that had recently been reopened. Maybe my mom'll be part of the court hearing?! See what she said about it.
7) Nov. 9: I went to dinner with Mr. Moffat (Parker's dad) and his sister Camille, who's my age. I also went to a Business Portuguese competition that Parker was in.
8) Nov. 12: I attempted to register for classes. I'm going to have to get a new schedule over Christmas Break.

9) Nov. 19: A random girl in the testing center bought me candy for my test (well, quiz) when she saw my signature card lacked funds necessary for what I wanted. I got a 100% on the quiz.
10) Nov. 19: I met Chad, who Megan is dating. Ok, well I met him before. But, I met him again.
11) Nov. 20: I went to a men's basketball game between BYU and University of Hartford. How cool is that?!?!? What are the chances?!
12) Nov. 20: I went in the Glenwood hot tub. Fear #2 and #3 faced: 2) being seen in a bathing suit in public and 3) ignoring the germiness of public hot tubs.

13) Nov. 20: I met Evan's friend Laurel's baby Paul. (that sentence was so grammatically incorrect...)
14) Nov. 21: I made a Pecan Pie.
15) Nov. 22: I had Thanksgiving at my grandma's house in Orem. With all my brothers and sisters except Michael. That was an accomplishment-- we haven't had that many of us together for Thanksgiving in a long time. Parker joined us.

16) Nov. 24: I went to the Utah vs. BYU football game. It was intense. I did NOT storm the field. Hmmm... come to think of it, I still owe Parker for buying my ticket to that game...

17) Nov. 24: I went to a birthday party for Dad at my sister's house.

18) Nov. 26: I celebrated my parents' 30th wedding anniversary at dinner with them and my sister and brother-in-law.

19) Nov. 29: I fell down the stairs from the 4th floor to the 3rd floor of the JKB and bruised myself up pretty bad. I think I was/am internally injured. My left knee still hurts to be turned in any position but straight. That means no Indian-style sitting or tap dancing, in case you were wondering. The bruises are still there. Ouchie. It was painful. A lot.
(Ok, fine. I don't do a lot of tap dancing)
20) Nov. 30: I got free tickets to Christmas Around the World and took Ashley Burton, Katie, Erin, and my cousin Liz with me. Then we went out to Applebee's after. It was fun.
21) Dec. 3: I slipped and fell on ice while walking to campus. Got my pants dirty, but didn't have time to go home to change. I also hit knee that had previously been injured.

22) Dec. 3: I got published in the Daily Universe! ... it was a letter to the editor, but still...
23) Dec. 3: I went to a ward FHE/Christmas Party and won the Gingerbread Making Contest with my roommates. We made the Provo Temple. Covered it in frosting. Stuck a yellow gummy bear on top. Sacrilegious? Maybe. Worth it? Oh yes.
We won a giant tub of ... get this... Jelly Belly Beans. And we all know how much I love those...

24) Dec. 4: Parker and I "ended our relationship" as Facebook put it. Details? Um, no.
25) Dec. 5: I went and paid rent, where, because the line was so long, a brilliant Glenwood employee suggested we just "guess-timate" our rent and put a check in the box. (She failed to mention that if you guesstimate too low, Glenwood will charge you a $25 late fee next month.) Just for the record, I did not do this. But the employee seemed genuinely surprised that no one took her up on it.

26) Dec. 6: My students had their closing community social that I couldn't attend because
27) Dec. 6: I went to a pizza restaurant with my Personal History class. There's only 8 of us so we had class there. It was a pretty rockin' night. Awww... I'm going to miss my CPH class!

28) Dec. 7: I attempted to see "It's a Wonderful Life" with Katie at the library. We had it planned for a month or so and they were showing it free. It was full by the time I got there. Every movie-rental facility within 10 miles of BYU had it checked out. Even Wal-Mart said they were sold out. LAME.
29) Dec. 8: I babysat for Erin and Utah got another snow storm
30) Dec. 8: I had a bad day in general and went home and went for a walk in the snow with Katie 'cuz I wanted to. Some kids drove by in a big SUV, rolled down the window, and threw a gimongous snowball at me and hit me in the general face area. All I could think was "Wow. People/the world suck/s right now."
31) Dec. 10: I performed in my Shakespeare class as part of a scene from 12th Night. It was fun. Reminded me of my old stage days.
32) Dec. 10: I went to FHE and we took family Christmas photos. Awww.

Alright, well I guess that's it. As you can see, not too much has happening, but it's been enough. I started a relationship and ended it. I slipped and fell twice. The Daily Universe printed two stories somehow related to me and are planning to print another one. My nephews are still amazingly wonderful and school is still pretty busy. Life is generally good I suppose.

I need to study my butt off for finals, and then I get to go home and I'm really really excited!!!

I'm going to try to add some pictures so this isn't quite as boring...

posting to keep you posted

hello there!

i was bumming around online as i'm wont to do when i have something actually important that needs doing. i stopped on my blog and noticed i haven't written since Oct. 1st, which wasn't terribly long ago, but it seems like it's been a while. So then i got to perusing other various websites and finally decided that i should do something productive.

i went to my composing personal history class tonight. we turned in our personal essays (which i ended up writing about friendly's-ish) and three episodes today. i'll get them back next week- hopefully the professor likes them. which brings me to my next point. we workshopped our personal essays last week. that means that everyone posted theirs online, we went to class, we read each others' and critiqued them. the author wasn't allowed to talk for the first ten minutes. it was my first experience in a writing situation like that, so i was kind of nervous. we had already gone over three (the class is only 8 people) and were moving on to mine.

and my professor said: (get this- it pretty much made my week): "I love this story. I was reading some of mollie's episodes and she writes these stories and i just think "gosh, did i have a childhood like this? this is amazing." and it's not even that she writes about amazing things. she just has a real talent for making scenes and getting her reader to experience it. it's really great. and there are some really great, fun lines in this. all over the place. i wish we had time to point them all out. but there are so many that she just slips in here and there to really create a great effect."

.... i left that day pretty much beaming from ear to ear. not even because she said something nice, but because she didn't say anything like that for anyone else's. she just introduced the other ones and we talked about them. and this time, before anyone else could say anything, she was like "i just have to say..." and proceeded with her comment.

this leads me to maybe almost kind of entertain the thought that i could someday write something that people would like to read that was worthy of a library bookshelf somewhere. how cool would that be?!

anyway.

so today we wrote portraits. they have to be about a person. and our relationship with them. i haven't decided who mine's going to be about yet. hard decision. so anyway.

for the past three, four, possibly five or more weeks, i've had this insatiable craving for sugar. my roommate mac is on a no sugar diet, and i joke with her that i think the spirits of her sugar cravings, after being exorcised from her body, were trying to make their way into craving heaven when i walked in the room and somehow got between them and their destination. because i swear, i have had an unnatural craving for sweets for the past while. it's been really ridiculous. and i try to buy healthy foods so i won't eat junk, and then i come home and my roommate has cookies, another made brownies, and i whip up a funfetti cake. i ate all three of those things.

i knew it was bad when i was walking back to my bedroom after a trip to the kitchen. i came to our closed bedroom door and realized i didn't have a free hand to open it. in one hand, i had a big piece of funfetti cake, and in the other, a brownie. "Oh, this is bad." i observed. my roommate heard me and opened the door and laughed at me as i looked from hand to hand realizing that my sweet foods addiction had officially interfered with my ability to live life. haha. but really.

so before i started to write this entry, i had plopped myself down on my bed, trying to think of something sweet to eat. i pawed through a box that had been packed from last year and found a box of jelly bellies that my mom had sent for my birthday. i had been saving them for the perfect occasion. "Well, this is it i guess." how anticlimactic. I saved them for some perfect occasion when i could whip them out. maybe, say, sitting in the living room with a whole group of kids, and somehow they'd get on the subject of jelly beans and then they'd all be talking about how much they love jelly bellies and how much they wished they had some. perhaps there'd be an argument over whether or not you really can tell what flavor they are without looking. and i'd stealthily sneak back to my room, grab the box, and demand a duel between the two arguers.

how anticlimactic. i repeated, as i popped another into my mouth. i've been eating them nonstop for the last hour or so. one at a time. the mixing of flavors is throwing off my taste-buds. "i need to stop eating them" i say as i blindly feel around the little plastic compartments and surprise myself with my next jelly belly bean.

i must say, if this sugar craving doesn't go away, I'M going to BE a jelly belly soon enough. i suppose there are worse things in life.

well anyway.

i got an A on my psych statistics test. he handed out a gradesheet and i'm in the top 5 of the class, which means i have an A overall so far. it looks like new testament is going to be the worst class for me this semester, which just makes me annoyed. i got an 89 on our test. because he asked completely random, obscure questions that no one on earth would know the answer to. oh well.

i have a test for psych 210 that closes tomorrow. i have to pay a late fee. i've been trying to avoid paying late fees this year, but this one, i feel, was unavoidable. i had two quizzes yesterday to study for, so i didn't get to study for the psych test till last night and today. that's not even enough time, but i'm hoping i'll do ok. we'll see. it's all essay, so that's a little daunting. as for those two quizzes, i took a shakespeare quiz on The First Part of Henry IV. He said most people don't do as well on that one because it's a lot of people and random relationships between them and all. I don't know if I'll be able to defend my 100% streak, but if I don't, i will at least get a 95. There was only one i wasn't sure about. so that's not too bad- although it is sad to ruin my perfect streak in the class.

i also took a stats quiz. i was really nervous about it. there were only three of us left in the room by the time i finished. (i had written a formula wrong, and kept getting an answer that wasn't a multiple choice option. i finally figured out the formula had been transcribed wrong, completed the problem, and handed in the quiz.) the professor graded it as i stood there. i got a 100%. yay.

you know? the thing about jelly belly beans is that they have so many different flavors. i keep eating them because of the variety. i can have popcorn, then hop over to the top row for some dr. pepper. oh i want fruit! time for a blueberry. ok. now i want something sweet- off to the toasted marshmellow. maybe later i'll spring for the chocolate pudding. seriously. jelly belly beans are like the gum in willy wonka. a three course meal. well, that is if your three courses consist of candy, soda, and fruit.

and the bubble gum flavor always makes me feel awkward to swallow it.

anyway.

i don't have too much else to say. things are good. i'm busy- and it's crazy, but it's going alright. hopefully i pass this psych 210 exam tomorrow. i'm really kind of dreading it. which is why i'm blogging instead of studying. not the best habit.

oh! monday was arrian's birthday so i made him a cake. i guess he liked it. i don't really know. i brought it over, sang, and left.

alright. well really. i should be studying.

TOMORROW'S FRIDAY!!!!!!!

oh HEY-- so this weekend i'm supposed to go pumpkin-patching with erin and bryce and will. (and sawyer). we were supposed to go last weekend but it rained. and it looks like it's going to rain this weekend. you wanna know what?!?! that means we've had FOUR CONSECUTIVE WEEKENDS WHEN IT HAS RAINED, SNOWED, AND/OR HAILED!!!! booo. (in a "this sucks" way. not in a halloween ghostly kind of way) this stinks.

some tidbits

hello ladies and gentlemen, assuming there is reason to use plurals on both of those...

so the last few weeks have been really crazy with working and going to school and all. and i told you i'd write a few stories about my students, and i will. i can't go into too much detail though, in case one of them stumbles upon this blog. :)

let me first just say that i have 40 students. they are all fabulous people. i love them much. i have enjoyed getting to know them and hearing their goals and stuff. i really do want to help them in any way i can-- i want them to be happy and successful. i wish they knew how much i care about them doing well. unfortun
ately, i only "have them" for a semester, so there will be some contact with them for the rest of the year, but i think most will lose touch with me in three months. sad. three months is such a short amount of time to get everything done!

anyway.

soooo first, a few weeks ago, my two co peer mentors and i held a dinner with our students and then held a workshop on effective study group strategies. it was pretty successful. anyway. at said meeting, we had to hand out paper for our students to write down lists of words we asked them to memorize in 30 seconds (
the point being if they all compared their lists, they could get all 40 words after 30 seconds, but on their own that had few.) so then at the end of the whole thing, two of my students were sitting at the table and said "here. we drew pictures of you." i laughed. and then i kept them and posted them on my wall at home over my desk to remind me of the reasons why i have this job. the pictures they drew are two of my reasons. [note: i don't even care that one of them spelled my name wrong, as you can see in the picture. and it doesn't even matter that they're not the best pictures in the world either; they're mine.]

so one of my students (male) broke his foot on a door. playing hall soccer. and then i had to go over and make a little house call yesterday to talk to a few of my students, and discovered one of them got in a fight this weekend (by no fault of his own) and got pu
nched in the face. he has a black eye. i asked how his parents responded and he said "are you kidding me? like i'm gonna tell them..." funny kid. and then i met with two students who i hadn't seen in a while at class-- they said they weren't in class for a while because they both had the flu. yummy. poor things. away from home for the first time and no one to nurse them back to health when they're sick. although, i guess one of the guys' moms came up to check in.

we had a good conversation and i was feeling all influential about getting them to come to class and work hard in school, and then i went to class today and they weren't there. hmmmmm. i asked then what their goals were for the semester and one of them said "well, once we get over being sick, we want to go to all our classes." i encouraged this goal and asked if they had any others. they said "well, if you came over here to get us to go to class, our goals are contradictory." i asked them to elaborate and he said "well, our other goal is a second date with you." ... they were just kidding, and i was laughing, but i had to explain that my visit did not count as a date. and then they said "fine. you can call it whatever you want. but our goal is to get you to come back here." hmmmmm... i'm just going to assume they don't really mean that. hopefully i'll see them in class tomorrow.

in other news, our apartment hasn't had hot water for the last 2 days. yesterday we got home from church and the water was freezing cold. not just cold. freezing cold. so tristan called maintenance and they couldn't come till today. so this morning, i had to shower because i was gross. well, i had to at least wash my hair. so i bent my head over into the tub under the faucet to get the job done. i wet my hair and shampooed as quickly as i could, but my hands and scalp had quickly gone numb and i was quite uncomfortable. so i pulled my head out, went into the kitchen, and put the two biggest pots i could find on the stove filled with water. i heated water, and used a cup to pour it over my head in the tub to get the shampoo out. it was at this point that i was so very grateful i had the brilliant idea to buy shampoo-and-conditioner 2-in-1 last time i went shopping.

i used the heated water to wash my face as well and then got dressed and went to class. let me just say, i felt very... 19th century-ish. washing my hair out of a pot of hot water. oh modern conveniences. how i love you. and how inconvenient when you don't work.

sooo yeah.

i've included another picture of my computer screen. the other night i was trying to look up a location for a store that was somewhere around my apartment building, i just didn't quite know where. being resourceful as i am, i plugged the address into google maps, and got the map shown in the picture. ... wow, thanks for that detailed information. now i know JUST where to go. let me just look out my window and see if i can see a giant green arrow anywhere. then
i'll be set. ... ok... so i was kind of annoyed. but then laughed at how ridiculous it was.

that's all i have for you tonight. i have to write an 8-10 page personal essay for class thursday and it's supposed to be my 3rd or 4th draft. hmmmm. i have NO IDEA what subject or event to write about and it's stressing me out. today i took a psych. statistics test and got an A on the multiple choice. we'll have to wait to see how i did on the open-ended questions.

i have a new testament quiz opening tomorrow, but haven't studied yet, so... we'll see when i end up taking it.

i got another 100% on a Shakespeare quiz. The professor seems to be even more impressed with me now. He always looks at me when he asks questions in class about things, and when he calls my name for attendance he always smiles at me like we have an inside joke-- a secret from the rest of the class. it's odd. but i'm not gonna complain. it's certainly better than having a teacher hate you.

life has gotten so crazy, it's ridiculous. i feel like i'm so busy- going from one thing to the next all the time. my students take up a lot of my time and energy, but i am enjoying it so much. the only problem is trying to go to school at the same time, but i suppose by what i've written here, it looks like i've got that down too.

life is good.

busy.

but good.

i'm happy. today was a perfect october day. it was my half birthday! it doesn't feel like it's been 6 months. weird. but anyway. october and april are my two favorite months. spring and autumn are my two favorite seasons. and today was a perfect example of why i like october and april. it was cool-ish. not hot, but still warm enough to bear being outside. there was/is a lovely breeze that kept the air moving, and it smelled like fall. there was a crispiness to the air, and the leaves were blowing around, crunching under peoples' feet. the sky was clear (until about 6 pm) and it was just a beautiful day. perfect. it made me want to go buy pumpkins. or rake leaves. or drink apple cider. i LOVE fall. unfortunately Utah doesn't have too many deciduous trees, but they seem to change color a bit and it reminds me of home. as i said, it's days/nights like this that remind me why i am so enamored with autumn. i adore it. i wish i could bottle up days like this and keep them for when things just aren't going right. even a bad day can be made better if its blessed with good weather. a rainy bad day has no redeeming qualities, in general.

anyway. as i said, life is good. i am happy.

the living space, among other things.

So a long time ago, when I moved into my new apartment, I decided to paint the walls because Katie and I were sick of living in dorms that are so prison-like it's depressing. So, we decided we'd take advantage of the fact that we have real walls. So all my roommates were telling me that we could paint, but I thought I better go to the office to make sure that I wasn't going to be charged an exorbitant amount of money for doing so.

So I traipsed over to the office and asked them. They told me I had to sign a paper saying I'd pay $25 at the end of the year if I didn't paint it back to white. The $25 would be their payment so they could paint it back. I was annoyed. Because everyone I knew around here was painting left and right, and me being the goody-goody that I am, I had to go and ask, and had to pay $25. Annoying.

So my mom came over a couple days and we went and picked out a periwinkle color, moved all the furniture, and painted the room. It took a long time and after completing the first coat, I decided a second coat was just not necessary. I see now (after it dried and all) there are plenty of spots where a second coat would have been ideal, but... I'm only living here for a ye
ar so I don't care much. And, another conclusion reached after finishing the job, I have decided they can have $25 to paint it back- because I sure as heck wouldn't paint a room for $25 and I'm not going to go spend $20 on paint and then spend hours doing something I don't want to do just to save $25. It is soooooo worth it to me to just pay it at the end of the year.

Anyway. So I think it looks quite home-ee. My h
andy dandy brother Kyle came over and took me to Home Depot to buy the stuff so he could put the shelf up for me. That was very convenient because I really have too much crap to put under my bed, and having a shelf makes things more accessible and makes the wall look less bare.

Since these pictures were taken, I have added a square arrangement of 12 pictures to that big empty spot on the wall above my desk and below my dalmatian poster. They're all pictures of home and people from home, so it helps me get my CT dose whenever I need it. I think my w
all looks quite nice and I'm happy with the way the room looks. I also added the small shelf at the end of my bed and the mirror so that I don't have to always go out into the hall when I need a mirror (i.e. putting on make-up, putting in contacts, etc.) because the mirror is above two sinks in the hallway, and it's just a little too public sometimes.

In the last picture you can catch a glimpse of our walk-in closet. It's nothing terribly special, but it is kind of fun to tell people I have a walk-in closet. And it has a lot more bar space than Heritage Halls did, so I'm finding plenty of room to hang everything.

I have to go through and down-size my wardrobe though. I just went shopping with Erin and bought two new pairs of jeans because I recently ripped one pair and decided another was too worn out to wear. So I got new ones. I counted how many pairs of pants I have, and it made me feel a little guilty for buying more. I have 38 pairs of pants. ... Of course, I wear about 15% of those on a regular basis, but I have in my possession 38 pairs of pants. Yes, I think I'm right- it's time to down-size. (p.s.- I won't tell you how many pairs of shoes I have because I think all of those are necessary and refuse to down-size my shoe collection.)

Anyway. That's about it for now. Work is going well-- soon I will post some stories about my students. They're pretty entertaining people. I love them much. And classes are going pretty well. I was the only one in my Shakespeare class to get a 100% on our first quiz, so that was exciting. The professor now seems to hold me in high regard which is kind of fun.

I took my first Psych Statistics quiz on Wednesday and think I did pretty well. I'll find out on Monday. I
've been learning a lot and keeping really really busy.

until again

the faces in these places...

hello all!

this is going to be short because i have a ton of things i should be doing. but... i just wanted to add another to the list.

last night a girl told me i looked like the girl who played joe in little women. it turns out that woman is winona rider. care to compare?
It's weird that all of a sudden people seem to think I'm everyone else. But, I decided that it might just be because I've never met such a large number of new people in my life. That's why I've never heard this all before. I've never been a new face to anyone. Because I grew up in a town where everyone's face is familiar, so you're not trying to link a new face to someone's face (like someone famous) that you already know. Make sense?

I think so.

Hope you're all doing well. Sometime I will write a good update.

closure for provo

so, i wanted to write a post today, but right now, i will offer you a news story found here .

They found Camille Cleverley's body today around 3 pm. (She was the missing BYU student last seen on Aug. 30). She was found at the bottom of a cliff up by bridal veil falls (for any of you familiar with the area.)

So yeah. I heard about it tonight at ward prayer. It's sad, but it looks like she just fell. It makes me feel better to know she wasn't kidnapped and assaulted and all. As I said, it's still sad, but I'm glad their family (and provo) knows now. It was getting eery walking by tons of posters every day, wondering if they were ever going to find her.

Yup.

A real post will come soon. Possibly/probably tomorrow.

Extra Extra: Tina Fey is Broke!

Hello all!

So I'm back in Utah and I've had so many posts I've meant to write lately, including this one. I started my job as a Peer Mentor for Freshman Academy at BYU. This means I have 40 students to look after for the semester. I attend their classes, hold personal interviews, and host lunches/dinners/study groups that may or may not involve their professors. It is a somewhat daunting task. I was really nervous to meet them at New Student Orientation last week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). But I had the best turn-out of most of the groups-- 30 out of 40. The students I met were really receptive and really nice. They seem to even like me! Yay! It's weird how much I care about them-- I got their names in July and meeting them was so exciting. These are my students. These are my students. It's great. It's going to be a busy semester, and it's probably going to get overwhelming, but it's going to be great.

Anyway.

While at New Student Orientation, one of my students said "You know, you really look like Rachel Leigh Cook." Hmm. Never in my life have I been told I look like anyone "famous". Never. Not once. Except for when Mrs. Bing told me one of my prom pictures looked like Judy Garland. So this was a relatively new experience for me. Then, the next night I was at an activity that involved all the freshmen (4500 is a lot) and was sitting in a group of students I didn't know. One of the girls sitting next to me looked over and said "You know, you really look like Tina Fey. You just need the boxy glasses. You look a lot like her- it's weird." Hmmmm. And then on Saturday, Katie's dad was here. She mentioned something about someone saying I looked like Tina Fey, and he said "No, you look like Anne Hathaway." (Ok- so this is just weird.) Then when mentioning all these famous people that I apparently look like, my uncle said "I've always thought you and your sister look like Lindsay Lohan. Before she got weird."

Wow. Somewhere in the last week I apparently developed a look-alike face. Weird. So, of course, I have included pictures of me and all of them so you can make your own judgments.

Then on Monday (our day off) I went to the bookstore to buy some books. I had been putting it off because (as I told all who inquired) I couldn't stand to see that much money leave my bank account at one time. So I was putting it off as long as possible, so as to preserve any feeling of protectiveness I had regarding the money I spent my entire summer trying to earn. Anyway. I signed up to take a Shakespeare class because I felt like I didn't know enough about his works to feel like an intellectual member of society and it filled a General Education requirement. I went to the bookstore and eagerly searched the shelves for Eng. 232 Section 1 to find the two books listed. My finger scanned the labels. I stopped when I finally found the correct one. My eyes shifted their gaze about 2 inches above to the shelf of books. My mouth fell open and before I could think I said out loud: "You've got to be kidding me." A guy book shopping next to me laughed. The book I was required to buy is about 5 inches thick. 2100 pages. Like 15 lbs. And, the best part, it cost me $80.

( I had to include a picture of this thing... but the picture doesn't quite do it justice. You can't get a feel for the weight and the girth. Which, by the way, I believe would be 3. Yes, 3 girth units is about right. If you haven't seen Brian Regan that doesn't make sense to you.)

No, wait, I think the best part was when I went to the class on Wednesday and the professor informed me that this literary monstrosity is supposed to accompany me to all 47 class periods during the semester. I am supposed to cart this thing back and forth 3 times a week. And, my new off-campus apartment (that is turning out to be less than fabulous) forces me to walk 25 minutes to get to the edge of campus. And campus is a big place. Seriously. Well, I should have strong shoulders by the end of the semester-- and possibly a deep hatred for a Shakespeare: either the William Shakespeare who wrote all the plays we're studying, or the William Shakespeare who teaches the class. (Yes, that really is his name. I wish I was making it up.)

Anyway. So I paid for my books- which were ridiculously expensive- (now I fully appreciate the books provided for me in public school)- and paid my partial tuition (which is a tiny amount in the whole collegiate scheme of things). But these things still made me feel quite broke. How quickly money slips out of a bank account. How expensive life is!

More entries to come soon,

back in provo

well, i'm back in utah for now.

i have some pictures and stuff and want to post a real entry soon. but for now, the talk of the town is a missing BYU student named camille cleverley. last seen on thursday august 30. check out the news story if you want.

i hope she turns up safe and relatively ok. i hope "foul play" really isn't involved-- it's just stories like these that make me a little more nervous to be walking to and from campus alone- (which i was already quite freaked out about.)

pictures and a short update

soooo hello there.

i had a whole post all planned, and then i decided i'd rather not. so, i'm just posting some pictures. last weekend nichole (my roommate) came to visit and sleepover for the second time. i forgot to take pictures the first time, so this time i took a few. we went to dairy queen and ate and then sat
and talked for a long time. then we went to friendly's for ice cream. (mmmm ice cream). then we went to where megan was babysitting so that me and megan could practice our performance for church the next morning. (we were playing a piano flute duet). so yeah.

i got up in the morning and nichole and i made chocolate chip pancakes, scrambled eggs, and ham. it was yummy. (besides the ham-- which turned out to be 1.5 weeks expired.) anyway... yup. nichole and i know how to have a good time-- it's fabulous when she visits-- even though we have yet to get together on a night when neither of us has anywhere to be in the morning. sleeping in would be nice.

and, of course, my beautiful amazing little nephew was born recently. for pictures, click on the link on the left that says "My Adorable Nephew". there are pictures. he is such a handsome boy. babies make everything right in the world.

oh, and at the beginning of this week, after nichole slept over, i went to dinner with jackie, nick and sarah. (i mention this so the picture doesn't seem so out-of-place). then we went to jackie's, went to DQ and then drove up the berlin turnpike trying to find a bowling alley that was open. we finally did, and i won the game! with a 120! it was wicked fun. got home at 1:00ish. and... 4 nights ago i went bowling with my brother and sister at midnight, and i scored a 129!!! i love bowling :)

i wonder if i'm as good during daylight hours :P

and this next week i should be going out with michelle and sarah, and possibly jackie, and maybe danielle-- i need to call her. and i am also in the process of making plans with some high school faculty members, which should be quite fun :) i'm looking forward to all of those events. keeping quite busy :) especially with being scheduled to work a stink load of hours at friendly's. oy.

my roommate (from last year and for this year) called today and we got to talk for a while, which was wonderful cuz i miss her. it will be nice to go back to utah.

anyway. that's it. soooo until again,
mollie

time flies

i have been home for more than 2 months.
(this also means my summer is 2/3 over.)

whoa.

Friday, June 29, 2007

update?! i know, i was surprised too.

hellooooooooo everyone (which is less than or equal to probably no one)

i hope you're all enjoying your summers! i am trying to get used to being home, and it's finally working out, when i realize that i'm leaving again in 1.5 months. why is it that once you get settled you have to move again? (ok-- so that's not entirely true-- i spent 6 months being "settled" in utah) but anyway.

right now i am being graced by the presence of a one miss nichole bennett who happens to be sleeping over my house tonight! hurrah for roommate sleepovers! of course... living together for 5 months kind of takes the novelty out of sleepovers, but still fun. mm-hmmm.

the chimney guys came on tuesday and started at their ever-so-enjoyable work of tearing down our old chimney and rebuilding it to its previous stature. ... which is code for loud and obnoxious banging in the wee hours of the morning. ... "wee hours" being code for 8-10 am.

anyway.

that's about all i've got for you tonight.

i guess you'll just have to call to get more detail :P

25 days in ten minutes or less

hello ladies and gentlemen!

it has recently been brought to my attention that i have not updated my blog in almost a month! i pointed out to this reader (who shall remain anonymous) that i haven't written much because i don't feel like i have much to say anymore. my life is made up of work for freshman academy, working at friendly's, and working at the high school. and that's about it!

it's been really nice weather here for the past couple weeks, except today has been taken over by much much rain. i do not like the rain. i'm one of those people that runs from their cars to get shelter so i don't have to get too wet. of course then i realize how silly it is that i'm running away from water. but whatever.

i've been hanging out with michelle quite a bit since i got home. we go to lunch and shop and generally have a good time. it's nice to catch up with her. going to school to work is just a little weird-- the kids seem so young-- even though i know that less than a year ago, i was one of them. it makes me think how glad i am to not be in high school anymore. because with high school comes seminary. and... getting up at 5:30 am was never one of my favorite things. now that i've spent a year in college not having to get up a single day before 7 am, (which i thought was ridiculously early), i have wondered how i survived high school. getting up that early and having to go to a solid block of classes for 6 hours and then spending at least 3 hours after school every day for extra-curricular stuff. i honestly don't know how i did it.

anyway. so the high school is just weird. mostly because of the fact that, as i said, it's a high school, and i'm a college student. but moving on...

so i'm working for ms. line now. she has a LOT of stuff. like... a lot. but it's generally all in the right place, just not organized at all once it gets there. so i've been organizing binders and stuff because she's got a ton of them. and then i've been typing some stuff for her, which is good because i'm generally good at typing. sometimes i go visit ms. stillman or mrs. bing for a little while during my day, but that's about it. on friday i ate school lunch again! i was excited about the lunch part-- a full meal for like $2. but it was definitely weird to walk into the cafeteria again. eewww weird.

anyway. so yeah. that's been the extent of my daily happenings. not much to say, as i said. i've been trying to read more, but haven't read more than two pages of anything yet. but i have to read for freshman academy and the reading is due tomorrow, so i guess i'll be spending most of my rainy day at home reading about how to make the best out of my first year experience. yupppp.

ummmm... what else can i even think of?! OH! ok-- i got my hair cut about a week ago. it's at my shoulders and then it has all sorts of layering and angling and stuff so it's different. but... i don't like it. which is why i haven't posted any pictures of it. the woman insisted more layers and the addition of angles would make it look "so much more texture-ee". i didn't really have the heart to say no. before i got my hair cut, it was all generally one length and then it had about an inch of layering at the end of it. so when the hairdresser asked me what i wanted her to do, i told her "i just want it like it is now, just at my shoulders." she said ok and then cut it all to my shoulders. she says "you just want it one length?" i said "well, it had some layers at the bottom before." and she looks at me like oh-my-gosh-i-can't-believe-you're-this-stupid-and-i-can't-believe-i-have-to-explain-this-to-you and then says "well yeah, but we cut that off."

ooo wow, thank you captain obvious.

oy. anyway. so to make the story short, she cut all these layers and angles into it and it's a little... shaggy? looking. i can't think of the right word but it does that weird flip thing. where the bottom flips out and all the hair above that flips in. it's weird. i don't like it, as i said. i can get it to look semi-normal if i spend time blow-drying it all to curl under. then it looks fine. but when it just dries, it looks a little strange. i said i felt like a guy in a 90s boy band-- with the long shaggy hair. megan said i look like a 10 yr old. however, mrs. bing told me it looked very "chic" sooooo i guess this haircut is getting mixed reviews.

well anyway. it's kind of sad to think the most exciting thing that's happened to me in almost a month is getting a bad hair cut! :P
obviously other things have happened, but... if i've already told those things to the people that i wanted to hear them, so if i didn't tell you, i'm sorry-- i suppose you lose this time.

ummmm. oh! i walked ms. stillman's dog once. that was kind of exciting. and i started my job at friendly's. and i've been talking to friends a lot to keep in touch. nichole (my roommate from freshman year who lives in CT with her sister) got a call unexpectedly that her father died a couple weeks ago so i went and visited with her and drove her family (such as it was) to the airport. it was really sad and i felt so heart-broken for her and her family. but they are all such strong girls and think with a little time they'll be generally alright. i found out just a couple days ago that marlene webster (the first friend i made at girls' camp who was also my first friend in my stake, outside of my ward-- we were really close for a while until the boundaries got changed and she got reassigned to a different stake.) also lost her father. i knew he had been sick with pancreatic cancer, and i followed the blog their family kept, so i knew it must be coming soon, but it's still sad. marlene's an amazing person-- her whole family is amazing. sooo hopefully megan and i will be able to make it to the funeral on wednesday night.

anyway. i suppose that's enough sad news for one day. i have to get up and shower now so i can be at the school to work at 11.30. soooo yeah.

i hope you're all doing well and i hope you keep me updated!

until again,
mollie

un-noteworthy

well hello there!

it's thursday, so i suppose i should post an entry. i don't have much to say. except for the fact that i can't believe i've only been home for a week-- it feels like the longest week EVER. seriously. i can't believe that 8 days ago i was sitting around in utah. that is a little bit crazy. it really feels like it's been a while.

hmmm other than that, i can't think of too much that has happened. on friday last week, i went to the school and that was about it. on saturday i cleaned the bathroom (which was disgusting-- i swear you'd get dirtier showering in there) and then babysat for a family in my ward. i got home at about midnight. then on sunday we went to church-- it was my first week there since the ward had been joined by the disbanded new britain ward, and therefore requires spanish translation, with separate english/spanish sunday school classes. it was fine-- just kinda strange because i'm used to knowing relatively everyone. anyway.

ummm... then on monday i bought flowers and brought them with me when i went to school. on tuesday, i ... made cakes and brought them with me when i went to school at 1:15. on wednesday, i went to school at 1:50ish. today i went to school at 11:30 and on all those days i stayed till about 5:30. mrs. bing is on her way to having organized files! it's a big job, but i think she'll be a little less stressed and a lot more efficient, so that'll be good. then i move on to ms.line who has informed me her stuff will make mrs. bing look anal retentive. hmmmm.

anywayyyyyyyyy. i applied to 2 places and i'm in the process of applying to 2-3 more, so we'll see-- hopefully i'll have a "real" job soon. i got freshman academy work, which i think is going to turn out to be more work than i expected. so i have to do that tomorrow too. it's weird-- it's the weekend-- i'm gonna have nothing to do! haha

ummmm what else did i do this week?! oh, tonight i went to institute. my dad teaches and megan and i went. we played volleyball after and it was kinda fun. but... i'm not really an institute fan, so we'll see.

well, i usually have a good story to tell or something, but i can't think of one today, so this is just more of a chronological outline. but oh well.

i'm off to bed,
-mollie

convocation, aviation, and reunion-ations

hello ladies and gentlemen!

so i'm not sure who reads this these days, since i'm HOME again!

since i was a lazy bum last week and didn't post my weekly entry, i suppose i shall do so now. of course, it is now past midnight, so this will say it posted on friday. hmmm.

anyway. so last friday, i got up at the break of dawn (6:30) and got dressed and went to my brother's convocation in the wilkinson center. it was long, and we sat up in the balcony. but it was exciting to see my brother get his diploma. it brought back a whole wave of memories of high school graduation. it was really weird. and then we went to the reception and ate some food which was in the tanner building. the FA office is also in the tanner building, so i walked down to say hello to my future bosses and let my parents find out what i'm doing next semester. so that was semi-exciting.

after that, i went to my brother's condo to hang around for about an hour before heading to the provo tabernacle for my sister's convocation at 2 pm. we met her in front of the courthouse where they took a picture of all (150ish) of the law school graduates. if kyle's convocation didn't bring back high school memories, erin's definitely did. i don't really know why. it was weird. so my sister officially graduated from law school! now all she has to do is pass the bar this summer! it was exciting to see them put the little hood thing on her, and even though it seems kinda silly, it made me think about hopefully someday getting a master's degree in something productive so i can have a little hood too! (:

i forgot my camera for my brother's convocation, but got it for my sister's, so i have some pictures of the law school graduate and me and my brother. as you can see...

anyway.

so then saturday i don't remember what happened, and sunday we hung around my grandma's house mostly. on monday, i went to ogden to some museums in Union Station. I liked seeing the old train cars-- the guy showed us an old military medical car and a mail car. those were pretty cool. and then they showed us the fancy expensive old cars. it made me want to ride in one. they seemed much cooler than cars on the road today.

that night, i went out with ryan. well actually, i suppose we went "in" because we were at my sister's house watching episodes of The Office. i said good-bye to ryan until i see him 4 months, which was really weird because i've gotten used to seeing him all the time. but it was an enjoyable evening. mmmmm. (:

on tuesday i went up into the canyon to south fork park (my personal favorite) with my family for a picnic. my dad put a plastic bag of sodas and bottled water in the creek that goes through the park that went right by our picnic spot. i went to get one and apparently upset the divine weight distribution of the thing because i sent 3 bottles of water and 1 pink lemonade floating down the river-ish. fantastic.

of course then the task became running down along the stream far enough to get in and have time to intercept the runaway beverages. my uncle and mom were both helping, but i was the one wearing plastic flip-flops, so i was the one nominated to walk around in the creek on the pointy rocks and all. (nevermind the fact that i was the one responsible for the whole event in the first place.) so i jumped in and walked upstream trying to get a hold of these bottles. you know that scene in fox and the hound when Tod goes into the river and tries to suavely swipe a fish out to impress Vixie? I felt like that.

we were finally able to recover all the delinquent bottles, at which point i realized that my feet were numb from the ankle down. the water was soooo cold.

anyway. so we ate, and then the wind started to pick up. my grandma was laying on a blanket on the ground, and her hat flew away into the little creek that goes through the park and began quickly floating away. guess who ran down and fished it out? [ok, so i secretly felt like the hero. haha]

anyway.

soooo then we went back to my grandma's house and sean came and picked me up. we went to di
nner. i wasn't hungry, but he ate. and then we went mini-golfing. that was our third time. the first time, i won. the second time, he won. this was our tie-breaker. except, i got my butt kicked by like 11 strokes. oh well. then sean took me back to my grandma's and we said good-bye which was weird because it will be odd not seeing him for 4 months. but i gave him a few hugs and off he went.

then i got up on wednesday and packed my suitcases. we went out to lunch for a last time as a family such as it was-- without my sister or two brothers. hah.

then we left for the airport at 5 and had two flights, one to denver and one from denver to hartford. it
was a long night. i didn't get into bed in cromwell until 7 am. 7 am! people are going to work at that time! it was sooo weird! i felt robbed of a night! i left when it was light, and i got to my destination when it was light... where did the night go?!

it was weird. i had the window seat on the second flight, and we were flying through the dark, and then, you look out and it gets lighter. so from right to left, my view was a bright rainbow of color at the horizon
that faded and faded until behind us was complete darkness. it was really odd. we were flying out of darkness, out of night. very very strange. megan was right- there's only one explanation for this-- time travel. i traveled two hours into the future this morning when i got here. hmmm.

oh my goodness! ok... i have to tell this. ok. so we were standing in line
waiting to check our bags, and the TSA guy was right next to our line going through someone's bag. it was stuffed clear full and we were watching him trying to shove stuff back in there and trying to get it to zip back up. i was talking about how disturbing it would be to know they were going through my luggage. so i took my bag and put it behind the little security zone for them to put through the big x-ray whatever-it-is, and we were standing there trying to figure out where my mom's film was in one of the bags because film can't go through the x-ray whatever-it-is, and i looked over and saw, horror of horrors, the TSA guy unzipping MY bag.

now, you don't understand how much this bothers me. not only for the sake of embarrassment with some middle-aged guy going through your underwear and clothes; that doesn't even bother me. what bothered me was that i spent almost an hour packing that bag making sure everything had a specific place so that everything would get there in the best condition possible. all the breakable things had clothing padded around them. it was all very strategic. and here was this guy, pulling out my strategically placed clothes and haphazardly plopping them on the table. he took out the books i had packed and went through my scriptures. so then i thought "well, maybe he's paying attention and he knows where all that stuff goes when he puts it back." but, to my extreme discomfort, i watched him simply take the clothes and books and shove them back in in any place they would fit. didn't he know he was upsetting the packing universe by simply shoving things in the most convenient spot?!

i watched him shove some stuff and then push to get the zipper closed. i was very distraught. he moved all my stuff! it all had a specific place in my suitcase, and he just gave no consideration to such a thing. didn't he know he would upset people like me that carefully plan their packing jobs?! bah. it bothered me a lot. i thought about it all the way home. i will admit this is not normal, but i can't help it! he just shoved it all back in there!!

the next time i travel i think i will tape a map to the inside cover of the suitcase, like the guide in a box of chocolates. then i can at least be rightfully annoyed with the TSA guy if he doesn't take 30 seconds to figure out the shampoo goes under the t-shirts not on top of the books.

anyway. i need to stop talking.

so i got here and went to bed at 7 and then got up at 11 and unpacked everything and got dressed and went to the high school.

i visited some important people from my high school past and it was fun to see them again! i missed them! and they always put me in a better mood... even though i'm usually in a good mood when i go to visit, i always leave in an even better mood. :P i have to go back tomorrow to see some other people, and for a little while i'm going to be "working
" for a couple of my past teachers to help them organize their classrooms and type up some stuff. sooo it'll be fun to visit there for a while. i missed them. i think i said that already.

anyway. soooo that's about all the updating i can think of for right now. tomorrow's friday. well, today is friday, but i don't consider the next day to have started until i go to bed. so it's still thursday as far as i'm concerned. where did the week go?! the days went by so fast! and i swear wednesday never happened.

well, i shall stop now. it looks like this will be my updating spot for all my utah friends now, instead of for all my CT people. that's a little weird. my audience just flipped. i now join the ranks of my readers for the last 10 months, and i now write to those who got my personal updates. now my readers-of-the-last-10-months get my personal updates. although i suppose some of them will probably still check in here to see what's up.

sooo anyway, in light of the new change in audiences, HELLO UTAH/COLLEGE READERS!!! I HOPE YOU'RE ALL DOING WELL! Even though this isn't the same as seeing me every day, i hope you find it is sufficient to cure your mollie withdrawals. :P

much love,
mollie

p.s.- the last picture is of my dad and will. will was standing on the step with dad, and he took dad's hand and pulled him down to sit on the step. so dad sat down and then will scooched back and sat next to him and just looked out onto the yard and street. it was cute.

p.p.s.- yes, i know reunion-ation isn't a aword... but it rhymed.

ok--

so last night at about midnight, i was writing my weekly post, but only a short one to say that i would be postponing a real post until today.

i was tired, and my computer was whining about a low battery.

but before i could click the post button, the computer went dead and i went to bed. (it rhymed!)

so... i'll write later.

off to my brother's convocation. at 8 am. who planned that?!

-mollie
