Shopping Spree

dear readers,

I got a pretty hefty pay check on Friday and was feeling excited about getting two things that I have been putting off while I was in school etc.: jean shorts, and new sneakers.
Since Erin is out of town and Megan is in Idaho, I was in Provo with nothing to do today. So I got up at the crack of 11 am (I went to bed late, ok?), got showered, got dressed, and headed out on my quest for my new jean shorts and sneakers. New shorts because I have none, and sneakers because mine are literally falling apart. I think I've had them for 4+ years.

Here is my day, documented and chronologized.

First stop: Gas Station on 800 E.
Because the gas gauge doesn't work in the car, I keep track of the mileage in a book. Last time I went to buy gas (a few days ago), I knew it was almost empty, but the pump shut off after 4 gallons. I went back today hoping to get more. It shut off at .93 gallons.
Gas: $2.15

Second stop: Ross- because I had seen shorts there about two months ago that I told myself I could wait to buy. It was apparently Hispanic day at Ross because the store was packed with people who did not speak English. I felt like I was in a foreign country, and this is MY country! Spanish is taking over America. In other news, the shorts were nowhere to be found, and they didn't even have anything I was interested in trying on. They had lots of shoes, and two pairs of sneakers that I picked out. After much deliberation, and consultation with megan, I decided on a pair of white Avias. I also talked myself out of buying a pair of white flats I liked that were $13.
New sneakers: $19.99 + tax = $21.36

Third stop: Old Navy
They had red capris for $10 that I liked, but I was afraid they made my legs look big, and also may have been really attention-drawing (being bright red and all). So no go. No jean shorts in my size. The store was packed with people because they were apparently having a $1 flip-flop sale. (Note: by the time I was there, only brown flip-flops in size 5 and 11 were on the shelf).

Fourth stop: TJ Maxx
After buying sneakers, I decided I could use a pair of sandles. And white flats. I can't wear flip-flops to the office, so I'm always wearing my red or black flats. And I swear my feet have recently grown because just in the last couple months I've noticed my big toes rubbing against the tops of both those pairs of shoes. What the heck?! (Note: I also bought my sneakers in size 9- my first shoes ever that size!) I need a pair of sandles to wear with jeans and stuff. Plenty of sandals at TJ Maxx but all more expensive than I was willing to pay. Tried on a pair of shorts that looked funny. No purchases.

Fifth stop: Famous Footwear
Again, plenty of shoes that were cute, but all at least $20. No thanks. Left this store quickly.

Sixth stop: Wal-mart
I used to have a pair of capris from Wal-mart that I really liked. I always feel a little self-conscious clothes shopping at Wal-mart, residue from long high school and middle school years, where no one was cool enough. But I gave up my pride today and went to see, realizing the worst thing people could think about me is that I'm smart enough to not spend $40, $30, or even $20 on a pair of shorts from the mall- but they had nothing I was interested in.

Seventh stop: Erin's House
Ok, Erin's house does not have anything for me to buy. But they have a bunny that apparently needed tending. I fed it, and took it out to let it run around the yard a little. I spooked it and I don't think it was happy with me. Poor thing.

Eighth stop: Gas station on Center Street.
After calling megan, who suggested I don't put the nozzle in so far, or I twist the pump a little, I went back to the gas station to try again. This time, it filled almost 10 gallons! Yay!
Gas: $23.88

Ninth stop: McDonalds
After getting gas, and walking around all day, I had a craving for french fries. I love french fries. It's a bad habit. I try to only have them a couple times a month. Today was one of those times. Mmmmm. Sometimes grease just tastes so good! It's so sad french fries aren't healthy!
Lunch- crispy chicken meal, with lemonade: $6.-- can't remember

Tenth stop: Home at about 4:30
All my running around made me tired. I came home and took a nap. At about 6:30, I was ready to try again.

Eleventh stop: K-Mart
I also owned a pair of capris from K-Mart that I really liked, so I thought I'd try my luck there. I did find a pair of jean shorts, but they were just like an inch too short. They hit about 1.5 inches above my knee and it just kind of looked funny. Sad, because I liked them. I also found a pair of jeans (not denim, so they're really light and thin) for $17. They were really comfy and on sale, so I bought them. I also found make-up, hand soap for the bathroom, and earrings because I don't have any plain silver ones I can just wear on a regular basis.
Jeans, make-up, soap, chocolate, earrings: $38.42

Twelfth stop: Macey's.
Quick trip in and out.
Milk, eggs, contact solution, breakfast foods, dinner foods, $40 cash back that I owe to Erin: $66.04

Thirteenth stop: Erin's house
Didn't want the bunny to go to bed hungry so I went over and put a handful of food in his bowl. I felt bad that I didn't have time to take him out and let him walk around a bit. I still think he doesn't like me.

Fourteenth stop: Home again

Money spent: about $157. Average price per item: $6

It's a good thing I only go on sprees like this 1-2 times a year. And it's also important to note that I only purchased things at 4 stores, and one of them was McDonalds. I went to 7. So, it could've been worse. Plus, I only spent about $60 on things I didn't need (total, minus food and gas), so it wasn't quite as bad as it seems. Also, I still don't have a pair of jean shorts.

So, the moral of the story is: do not let Mollie go shopping when she's bored. Also, it's a good thing Mollie has a job right now. Also, I need to create a budget. Also, as I said, it's a good thing this doesn't happen often.

until again,
mollie

Feeling the Burn. Or Fun in the Sun(burn). Or a Follow-up on my vaCAtion.

dearest readers,

I have been told multiple times by a variety of people that I need a new blog post. So, in case you're far far away and haven't heard an update about my spontaneous trip to California, here is the somewhat abridged version.

I got picked up at 4 am and we went to Glenwood to meet the other car. In all, our crowd was three boys: Sam, Ryan, John (a coworker of mine), a girl from the ride board who was being dropped off in San Diego, and four girls: Kaitlyn, Joan, Tamanna (my coworker), me. We slept and traded off all day driving. We made it to Las Vegas and walked down The Strip and back after missing our exit three times. We went to "Paris"- the big Eiffel tower on the Strip. They have fancy wedding chapels there, so we went in and took pictures.

Then (after getting a call from the other car that didn't stop in Las Vegas saying they ran out of gas on the side of the highway...) we made our way to San Diego and got there about 7 pm. We were staying on Coronado Island at the Navy Base. Ryan's dad was there to get us clearance to go in. That night we ate at the food court type place, and I also found out that Ryan's dad worked with my mom at the Davis County Health Department in the 70s. That's a little weird.

We checked into our rooms (in a hotel, right on the sand) and ran out on the beach. Went to bed. Woke up the next day ready for the beach, but it was too cold. So we went grocery shopping (so we wouldn't be eating out every meal). Had a hot dog roast on the beach that night, which was really fun. Went to bed. Woke up the next day ready for the beach. It was still a little chilly, but we went anyway. I fell asleep on my stomach because the sand was warm. The other kids went in the water. About two hours later we played some beach volleyball and then got dressed to go out "on the town". I got dressed (realizing I had missed the memo on bringing cute clothes to go out in...) and we went into San Diego. We walked around the shops and I kept feeling this heat on my legs and turning around to see if I was standing next to a heat vent. And then I realized it was just the sunburn on my legs. They were a bright tomato-ee red and really hot. They didn't hurt yet though.

By the time we sat down to eat dinner at a Mexican place, I had a fever and was shivering. We went back to the hotel and I collapsed on the bed in pain. The other kids went out to the beach again and we watched a movie. I got up the next morning to answer the door (it was the boys) and could barely walk. Moving my legs at all, or having anything touch them sent an enormous amount of pain pulsing through my legs. I made it to the door but had to sit on the floor after I opened it because I thought I was going to faint. Everyone got ready for church while I got on the computer and determined I may have had sun poisoning. Joy. I went to sacrament meeting and then Ryan's dad took me home where I spent the rest of the day lathering aloe vera lotion on my legs, popping ibuprofen every 4 hours or so, and laying in bed. The red part of my legs was swollen about half an inch higher than the rest of my legs.

My range of unpainful motion did not include using the bathroom, showering, getting dressed, walking, or even extending my legs completely, so I did not move much. That night we had a bonfire on the beach and made s'mores, which was absolutely fabulous. On monday everyone went back to the beach and I spent some time reading and trying to keep my feet up. I did get to see dolphins jumping in the ocean though- that was cool. We spent that night walking around the island in the fancy parts of town. I caught my reflection in a mirror at a store and gasped. Seriously- my legs were swollen to humongous proportions. My ankles were nonexistant and my knees were barely distinguishable. It was bad.

That night we were supposed to sleep on the beach, but no one wanted to camp, so we decided to drive back to Provo instead. We took one last picture (Tamanna is frowning because she wasn't driving back with us.) We left at 10 pm and I got back to my apartment at about 9 am.

I tried to go to work the next day and by the time I got off at 5, my feet had swollen over my shoes- it was really rather disgusting. I went to the doctor who promptly whipped up the skirt I was wearing (I hadn't worn pants since The Burn) and said to keep my feet above my head for another week or so and I should heal in a while. She said I could work half days if I did nothing else for the rest of the day.

So I worked 4 hour days and spent a lot of time on my back with my feet up, staring at the wall. Especially because, perfect timing, my power cord for my laptop stopped working- so no blogging or computer-ing. (I have since ordered and received a new one). On the bright side (ironic...) I got to borrow Erin-and-Bryce's DVD player and watch episodes of The West Wing for most of the days. That wasn't half bad. But I started to feel like a hermit. Those evenings with nothing to do... I'm telling you I almost started talking to my stuffed animals. Uh.... I mean, if I had stuffed animals. And, I watched a LOT of West Wing. I know this is true because I started dreaming in West Wing characters and episodes. Josh Lyman sat behind me at a play and we were old friends. CJ spent a while telling me about her latest job crisis. Seriously- I would venture to say these are key signs of a West Wing overdose. But, I love my West Wing, so I'm ok with that.

-----------------------------

About a week after I got back, I started walking a little better. And then, The Burn started to peel. That was... revolting. About six square feet of skin bubbling and flaking off. GAG. I hated it. And I had to wear pants to cover it because it was so disgusting, but it was also SO itchy.

-----------------------------

It has now officially been 23 days since The Burn and I have returned to wearing skirts. The backs of my knees are by far the slowest to heal and I still feel a little pain when I stretch my legs out, but about 99% of the time, I am pain free. The new skin is really dry though, so I'm applying lotion on an abnormally frequent basis.

-----------------------------

I did not take pictures of The Burn because I was so mad at myself for getting it, and didn't want my pitiful-ness documented. The only picture I have is the one I have posted. You can see my legs are clearly two-toned. That was the day of The Burn.

... And now you know. As for things that happened in the last three weeks that don't revolve around my sunburn, you'll just have to wait until another blogging mood strikes me.

Oh and, the good news is: my sunglasses made it all the way there and back. (Perhaps partly because I didn't get to do much that would have required them except try to hide my pitiful sun-burned identity in public, but still...)
